Energy Secretary Chris Wright Advocates for Expedited Permitting and Boosting U.S. Oil and Gas Production
March 10, 2025

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright recently reiterated his commitment to accelerating permitting and supporting the oil and gas industry during a private dinner with key executives ahead of the world’s largest energy conference in Houston. His remarks, which align with former President Donald Trump’s focus on boosting domestic oil and gas production, highlighted the urgency to streamline regulatory processes for energy projects.
The dinner, attended by executives from major companies such as Baker Hughes, Occidental Petroleum, TotalEnergies, Petrobras, and EQT Corp., provided an opportunity to discuss strategies for energy production and the new government energy dominance council. However, one issue that was notably left off the agenda was tariffs. Trump’s protectionist policies, including tariffs on neighboring countries like Canada and Mexico, have caused significant volatility in oil markets but were not addressed during the meeting.
Despite the administration’s push for increased production, the oil and gas industry remains cautious, with prices near their lowest in three years. As such, there is little financial incentive for companies to ramp up output when market conditions are uncertain. Executives are carefully considering how to approach future investments given the current economic climate. As the administration continues to push its energy agenda, industry leaders will be keenly watching how regulatory changes and government support shape the future of oil and gas production and investment.
